OPPORTUNITY AREA

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT EVERY DAY IN THE EU OVER 50 MILLION SINGLE-USE MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS ARE CONSUMED AND DISPOSED OF. UNTIL VERY RECENTLY, THERE HAVEN'T BEEN ANY VIABLE METHODS WITH WHICH TO RE-USE OR RECYCLE THEIR MATERIALS WHICH ARE TYPICALLY 90% PLASTIC.

VIRGIN MATERIALS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS CHEAPER AND CERTAINLY MORE READILY AVAILABLE TO MANUFACTURES, MAKING THE SWITCH A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE. ESSITY WANTED LIKE TO BECOME THE LEADING GLOBAL PLAYER IN MATERIAL RE-USE.

SOLUTION & KEY OUTCOMES

IN MY ROLE AS VENTURE DESIGNER FOR ESSITY AND DUE TO MY PERSONAL INTEREST IN SUSTAINABILITY AND TOPICS RELATING TO GENDER EQUITY I WAS TASKED TO LEAD THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A FIRST OF IT'S KIND CIRCULAR BUSINESS LEVERAGING SINGLE-USE MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS. IN THAT CAPACITY I LED THE ENTIRE RESEARCH, DESIGN, AND DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES FROM START TO POC.

THE ECONOMICS OF LARGE-SCALE SPECIALIZED PLASTICS RECYCLING POSED A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE TO ACHIEVING MEANINGFUL IMPACT. SO I PIVOTED TO THE PROJECT TO ENCOMPASS A DISPOSAL AND COLLECTION APP (Delphi) PARTNERING WITH LOCAL RETAILER NORMAL AS A FIRST STEP TOWARDS VALIDATING CONSUMER WILLINGNESS TO PARTICIPATE IN A CIRCULAR MODEL. THE APPLICATION WAS DESIGNED, TESTED, AND BROUGHT FORWARD TO SENIOR LEADERSHIP WHO GREEN-LIT THE INITIATIVE FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT.
